The Prime Minister of India serves as the chief executive of the Government of India and chairs the Union Council of Ministers. While the President of India is the constitutional head of state, executive authority is primarily vested in the Prime Minister and their chosen Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister must be a member of either the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha, the two houses of the Indian parliament.

Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first Prime Minister, holding the office for the longest tenure. Indira Gandhi was the first and only woman to serve as Prime Minister. Currently, Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister, having assumed office on May 26, 2014. Other notable Prime Ministers include Lal Bahadur Shastri, Morarji Desai, Rajiv Gandhi, P. V. Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Manmohan Singh.
